The Open Directory Project feeds several search engines with results. It also is spidered by Google and a listing in the ODP will benefit your PageRank (see the Google page for a description of PageRank). The Open Directory is non-commercial and all the editors are volunteers. If you are accepted there is no charge.

It is important to find the correct category when submitting to the Open Directory. On each page there is a link to submit your site to that category. If a category has no editor then it could potentially take a long time to get your site reviewed. Submitting one category up will normally speed up the process to the usual 2-4 weeks timeframe.

The listings in the Open Directory Project are alphabetical
