How
Alertra Works
|
|
Multiple
monitoring stations around the world take turns conducting rigorous
protocol-based tests on your Web server or other network service.
If a station reports a failure, another station checks again in
30 seconds.
After three consecutive failures, your telephone, SMS, AOL or email
contacts will be notified according to your schedule.
Conduct a spot check on any URL
|
Your
Web server is checked as often as you prefer, from once per minute to
once per hour. HTTP/HTTPS service checks your server and loads the page
to verify the content. HTTPb service performs a basic protocol check with
your HTTP server to make sure it's running. With either service, Alertra's
global reporting stations take turns checking your site. If a station
reports a failure, the next station will check it again in 30 seconds.
After 3 consecutive failures from different stations, the site will be
marked down and contacts will be notified according to the schedule you
establish. The contacts you specify are notified again when the site comes
back up.
HTTP/HTTPS
Service
Alertra monitoring stations connect to your server and issue an HTTP request
for the URL you specify. In addition to connection errors, HTTP response
code and response time, Aletra also loads the page. Alertra can search
the page for keywords you specify and can record the page size or SHA
digest and send you a Device Warning alert when your content changes -
if your page gets hacked you'll know it. You can also specify whether
or not to follow HTTP redirections. HTTP and HTTPS (SSL over HTTP) protocols
are supported.
HTTPb
(HTTP Basic) Service
This inexpensive service allows you to do a basic protocol check of your
Web server to make sure it's up and running. Alertra monitoring stations
connect to your server and issue an HTTP request (the page is not loaded).
If your server is not reachable, Alertra records the error. Otherwise,
the response code and response time from your HTTP server is recorded.
Other
Protocols
Monitoring for other Internet protocols such as ICMP (Ping), FTP, SMTP,
POP3, IMAP4 and TCP is also supported.
Notification
You can set up as many contacts to be notified as you like for each monitored
device. You can have one contact for daytime, one for nighttime and another
for weekends, or most any combination you can think of. You control whether
contacts are notified for Device Down, Device OK or Device Warning alerts.
If you don't set up a notification schedule for a device, your account
e-mail address will be used. For each monitored device, you can specify
your own subject to be used in alerts sent via e-mail.
Contacts
Notification e-mail can be formatted for your computer or handheld device.
Alertra can call your cell phone (or any phone) and deliver an automated
voice message to you or your answering machine or voice mail. Alertra
can also send notifications to your SMS capable mobile phone, AOL Instant
Messenger or other AOL compatible client.

Up-Time
Reporting
Even if you don't have a Service Level Agreement (SLA) with a hosting
company, it's vitally important that you are aware of the percentage of
time your devices are available to your customers or visitors. Alertra
records the date and time every time your devices change status. Alertra
provides a concise Up-Time Report which shows up-time percentages since
activation, per year and per month.
Logging
You can view a complete and detailed check log starting with the most
current check and going back several weeks. You can look at all alert
events, and jump to the detail log at the time of the alert. If you need
to create custom reports, you can get your device check log data and other
information via XML.
